I picked UN GO to be my detective anime for this season, and after watching its first two episodes, I quite like it. Because each case so far spans only one episode, the anime moves the plot at a very brisk pace compared to previous detective shows I have watched such as Gosick or Kamisama no Memochou, which has story arcs that span multiple episodes. It is not a problem however, whether there are slow and meandering mysteries, or quick cases, I enjoy it either way. What does bother me a little bit is that after the detective and assistant finds the real truth, it is not revealed to the general public, but a lie is substituted. I understand the anime’s reasons why a different story must be fabricated, but it still remains unsatisfactory to me. To spend all that effort in discovering the truth, only to have it suppressed in the end. It feels like a massive injustice has taken place, and the detective deserves better. I suppose this could be the one of the main themes of UN GO…
What also really interests me in UN GO is its setting. It takes place in a war-torn Japan. Numerous questions arise: Why was/is there a war? Who and what are the factions and groups that are/were involved? Why does the main character say it’s still “unsettled”? I hope the anime addresses these questions along the way.
